I will finish my first planter today. The glue I got at Lowes worked. I'll use epoxy on the next one. This is so much fun!

By the way, no form is needed for planters this size. The base gives it shape. It's kind of like brick laying. I have an idea for using party mix containers though! Milk jugs would be awesome too. I'll just scatter these among the flower beds. LOL.

Gotta see pictures! And what did you use for stones?

I used river rocks and some kind of slab rock for the base. It's working so far. Will post photos.

Here's a photo of the first one I made. I have to go in with a knife and scrape off the tan glue around the black rocks. This is supposed to be water proof. We shall see. I went ahead and planted a few little things I had in it to show it off. I ran out of black rocks. I didn't make this as tall as the ones I've seen. I will have to try that. I ran out of rocks and glue. LOL. I will cover the soil at the top with black rocks so you can not see it at all. Sorry for the crappy cell phone photo!

Clint: That is wonderful ... great job! Thumbs up Thumbs up Thumbs up What glue did you end up using? As clumsy as I am with glue in my hands (it seems no matter how careful I try to be, I get it everywhere!) but I think I need to try making at least one of these! Please post more photo's if you make more of these stone containers!!

Lynn: Thanks for that link ... I'd never seen that video!

I really like it. I think it would be cool to make a tall one and leave holes in the sides (kind of like a strawberry jar planter). You could easily do that.

Here is a link to the glue I used. I'm sure there are better glues, but this one is very thick and held quickly. I tried some epoxy glue I bought, but it was messy and slow to hold. I'm not sure how you would use the epoxy with a project like this. You only have so much time after you mix the two ingredients and then it doesn't hold instantly. I was having a very difficult time with it. It could be that it was the kind of epoxy I was using. I really think this would be fun if you had some great glue.

The glue I used dries to a color that almost matches the light river rocks I used. It scrapes off the rocks easily too so it's easy to clean up. It's supposed to be water proof so that is a plus. I saw some tubes of stuff they use for concrete and brick that might work as well. You have to use a caulking gun with them though. I will definitely be trying out more glues! The glue seems to be the biggest obstacle in this project.

Clint: Thanks for the link about the glue. What did you use for the slab/base that you built the rocks upon? I really love the idea of this project!

Thanks! I think the base is sandstone. I got it at Lowes. It was back with the other landscaping stuff. It's the kind people make pathways with.

These would also make good orchid and/or bonsai pots! The drainage is excellent because of the the holes between the rocks.

Beautiful and great job!!

Woofie- those videos are the property of IB now. It was great fun to make them, though! We wrote out the scripts for all of them, and the camera man was the real deal, flown in (thanks to NM) from Mass, and he worked with the Martha Steward show. It was a fun day.
