I said in the OT thread that Doris had gifted me with a plethora of daylilies the other day -- a lot of good clumps, and noting less than a double fan. I have an oval (more or less) in the front center of my front yard. You can read about it here: http://fiwit.blogs.com/fiwit/2...

I thought the red salvia around the border of it would give it a nice pop of color, and it did while the salvia was there. But it died.

So I planted spring bulbs around it, but they're done blooming when spring's over, and then the border ring was bare for the rest of the summer. So about the time I was posting here about it being Sue's fault that I'm looking at/addicted to daylilies, I decided I would plant daylilies around the spring bulbs, and they could take over when the daffy/hyacinth/crocus show is over. According to my research, I have a lot of mids and early-mids in the batch Doris gave me, so that sounds like a good batch to put around the oval. The border is only on 3 sides, like a U instead of an 0.

I'm thinking Chicago Apache at the very front, in front of the redbud tree, and my two tallest ones will be on either end of the U. Then fill in with no particular order other than mixing bloom times and trying to keep shorter ones towards the front, taller ones towards the back, with the spiders interspersed to astound folks.

I'll post pics when I'm done, and when it blooms.

Steph, there are only 2 outdoor things on today's agenda -- finish framing the raised bed (10 more landscape timbers - 14 already in place), and plant all the stuff I brought home from Doris' the other day.

Geez, how DO you get all this stuff done so quickly? Me, I would be really happy if I just got the daylilies planted, much less all the other stuff.

Quickly? It's taken me several days to get the raised bed framed, due to other projects. That oval was several days work a couple years ago, and the border was several more days work the following year.

Seems quick enough to me. Especially all you get done in a single day.

Oh. I'm single, live alone with my 2 dogs, and have very few outside commitments (semi-hermit) so that makes it easier. AND I was on vacation this last week.

All I did was run away to her house because I had bleached the subfloor in my hallway after ripping up carpet, and didn't want to be here to smell it. Helped her weed a couple seedling beds, gave her some tips on using her new camera, told her about ctrl-f on the computer, and she sent me home with a half-a-billion daylilies!

Sounds like a fair trade to me.

Still curious Mary, what is to become of the bleached subfloor. ??? Hardwood, new construction engineered, tile,or carpet?

Eventually a gorgeous slate-looking porcelain tile, when I can afford it. But I'm afraid a portion of the hallway subfloor will need to be replaced, because my angel-dog Zoe used the hallway as the outdoors, and I don't know if it's possible to get that smell out of the wood

Oh, that new bed is going to look wonderful! I like scattering the spider types around, too. :-)

I've got an "island" bed in my back yard with spring bulbs (mostly daffs but a few others, blooms early to late) and daylilies. I didn't plan my plantings very well, in part because I started out with a lot of unknown color seedlings LOL... but I did put shorter ones around the outside. I'm getting Sweet Woodruff established throughout the bed as a groundcover, plus short hardy geraniums ('Tiny Monster') at one end... since there are several trees to provide partial shade, the sweet woodruff loves it.

OT, but on the subfloor, I would think you could sand it down... penetration shouldn't be deeper than a wood stain would be, and you can sand off old stain, so... Hmm, maybe try an enzymatic cleaner rather than the bleach after sanding if there's any smell left. I'm not certain, but I think painting might also help, especially if you used a good primer like "Kilz" -- it seems to me I remember one friend using Kilz to cover the smell left in the walls from heavy cigarette smoking.
