How To Deter Wasps

By virginiarose
March 13, 2012

I was doing some research about wasps last year because we had a problem with them building a nest under our breezeway. I found that if you make a fake wasp nest, it will keep them away because wasps are territorial and they will think the territory is occupied. All I knew is that it should be round and gray, so I balled up a grocery bag and covered it with weather resistant duct tape. I broke the hook off a coat hanger so I could hang it. It worked like a charm all summer: no wasps, no pesticides!

Woofie - can't take credit, it's Margaret who posted that. Smiling But I can take credit for finding it online for $9. http://www.dwellsmart.com/Prod...

But that one is made of paper, which won't last long. Found this one: http://www.old-fashioned-value...

But I think you can make that easily with wire & that grey weed fabric. Might last longer in a humid environment than the ducttape one (duct tape would work fine in my area, very dry. But I'd be afraid of it falling apart in a humid environment like any place other than CO lollllllll). I think I'll try to make one next weekend.

The first link Toni posted has 2 for $9.95. It says wax coated paper but I wonder if you couldn't spray it with a clear matt lacquer to make it totally weather proof?

Ann - well, if the nest didn't drive the wasps away, the lacquer stink sure would!

Aha! I understand now. The fake hornet nest will scare away the paper wasps? Cool! I'm going to get one and hang it on the back side of my GH. I am forever fighting having wasps build nests in the nooks and crannies of that wood frame GH.

That is correct woofie, that is what was going on here. We have vinyl siding and they would go up under the panels somehow. If you have a big property you might make several. I throw mine away at the end of the fall and just make a new ones in the spring, yup it's almost time. Green Grin!

Silly me, and all this time I'd been thinking that the fake hornet nests were to scare off more hornets! Hilarious! *Blush*

Well, I'm just very glad you posted this tip....and that I stuck my nose into this thread! We have a real problem with those darn paper wasps; they're all over our barn and woodshed and my GH. Definitely going to try this! Smiling

In order to make your own fake nest, how big do they need to be? And for a home, would you need one or more per side of house? This is an awesome tip!

Mine is only about six or eight inches wide, not big at all. How many you need just depends on how big is the territory. I was going to make one for inside the garage also, for some reason they were attracted to the garage, but by putting up a nest, I am saying, 'this garage is taken' and they will go somewhere else.

We even took a couple with us when we went camping, hung one on the trailer and one some distance away in a tree.

What department and when did you buy these? I'm looking for them too. What do they call them?

Thanks so much

I bought mine at Walmart, they were inside in the house plants, fertilizers, that sort of stuff dept. There were 2 in a flat package, @ $9.99, it just said wasp nests to the best of my recollection. Shrug!

This year I had tons & tons & tons of wasps, but absolutely no hassles with them .. I guess they figured out that I was supplying the water for them so don't screw with the human? LOLLL Nyah, that'd be asking too much of their little wasp brains.

Just wait till the weather starts to turn.......I think that somewhere in their tiny wasp brains they realize that they're all about to die and they're none too happy about the prospect! Every year in the fall they get REALLY obnoxious!

I had a unexpected visitor who was respectful of the fake nest. He examined it and left. He has not come back and it has been a month. It was a wood borer bee.
