I'm trying to make my garden more attractive to butterflies and am making some progress but has anybody come across book that shows both the adult butterfly AND the caterpillar for each butterfly. I can't find anything describing the caterpillars that you want to protect verses the destructive ones. I know what a few of the more desirable butterfly caterpillars look like but there are a lot that I don't know what they become and I don't want to harbour the more damaging species.
Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Mat.6:28-29
I have a book called Caterpillars in the Field and Garden, by Allen, Brock and Glassberg. It has photos and info of different kinds of butterfly caterpillars. Another one, Caterpillars of Eastern North America by David L. Wagner, covers both butterflies and moths, showing both the caterpillar and adult stages.

Another way to attract butterflies is to put stones in the sun and they will stop my and warm theirselves. Maybe I can get some pictures this year because last year I went round and round with Kodak trying to get my camera fixed.
Also my neighbor has a muddie spot near A/c unit and they flock there to suck water out of the mud. I am trying to create a mudhole myself but was not real successful last year, I will keep trying though.

Good picture! They might be getting warm at same time.

They are never in the street around here. It's too busy, they would become a bookmark.

Susan, try a ceramic saucer (the kind that sits under clay pots) full of sand. Sprinkle some sea salt in it and keep it moist. I read that somewhere...

I did that Mary, just last year I believe but it was impossible to keep it moist. It would dry out so fast, does the salt help? I was going to undrain my own wet spot and see if I can keep it wetter but not wet enough for mosquitoes. Have a feeling they will be really bad this year. I planted a Lantana there last year also there are near by butterfly bushes.

The salt does nothing for the moisture, but it gives the b-flies essential minerals, somehow (or so I read). I put mine in a clear shady spot rather than full sun, and forget to worry about keeping it moist (oops)

I know, right.
