I deleted my previous post as to not cause a stir, but would like to say I did not mean to sound like I was lumping everyone together so I apologize for this.

Hi Karen, so glad you shared your input on this! I am absolutely, totally thrilled with my plants from you, and the only thing I wish you would do differently is to continue growing the small/mini daylilies -- but I do understand that you have to go with your own priorities. But I just love those little ones! I guess you're too busy to even think about it, but have you ever given any thought to doing some hybridizing yourself? That would be FANTASTIC!

I do hope you will join in here if and when you can ever find the time -- we have a great group here, and I'm sure we could all learn lots from you -- I'm going to copy your post and refer to it because I've been such a lousy daylily grower and want to do better. Interesting that you use Peters -- I've been using it half-strength on my little seedlings, but now I'm ready to try it full-strength on them.

Hemlady, this is way off topic... but I just clicked to enlarge your avatar photo... love it! Beautiful kitty in catnip nirvana! I submitted it for inclusion in the plant database, because I didn't think there could be a better photo of catnip anywhere. Smiling

Thank you for the warm welcome, I appreciate it. I would be more than happy to help with any answers you need, I personally don't have too much experience having only become involved in daylilies in the past 6 or 7 years since we moved to Florida from Australia but Guy has more than 25 years experience in a number of different climates and I can always seek his advice.

I will definately try to post some photos so you all can get a feel for our nursery and will try to post some new spring photos once we get into solid bloom - which by the way the weather is should not be far away.... already we are finding seedlings blooming and lots and lots of scapes.

Also I hope you understand the reasons for my post - I had no wish to upset anyone, just wanted to make it clear how we did things.

Thanks again.

I am so happy to see Karen here, WELCOME!! I am an avid Floyd Cove customer and anxiously await their intros each year. Last year we pestered them so much about this years introductions, that they actually posted their 2012 intros pictures and names before Guy had the time to write out the descriptions. Now if that isn't service, what is? I always pester her a lot and change my orders all the time before they are shipped LOL. Can you say "Make up your mind"?

I think maybe their biggest reason for such huge plants, besides lots of food and water, is their long growing season. I know that this year, I have the biggest plants ever with the mild winter. We also got some good rains. I also use Nutricote in my pots and some water soluable fertilizer.

An avid customer,

Dot

And Karen, you know we would love to see pictures of new seedling blooms too, if that's not a no-no for you. We really thrive on seeing them. Fred Manning has been so great about posting some of his, and Lyle too... and we now have quite a few people on here who have seedlings coming along, and you know we want to see everyone's new seedling bloom pictures! Please?

Can't wait to see them too. I have to admit though that I m looking into using the Bap etc. once I see what a plant can do on it's own. Reason is we are so short seasoned in comparison and it takes so much longer for enough divisions to sell and I need to shorten it up in order to make it. I don't mind getting the big fat things either but they do get smaller as they acclimate here so really makes no difference if I receive one. It is interesting what a person can so with these plants and they still survive our constant picking, poking and cutting and and Smiling

I got 2 more orders in today. I have 2 from Fred, aka Spunky1. I was so happy to win 2 fans of Italian Kakeidoscope. When I first unboxed them, I didn't notice, but one fan was actually 3 fans. The big fan had divided into 3 fans plus I had the 2 fan to make 4 fans for the price of 2. Happpppy!!!! Then I opened up 2 huge fans of Lillian's Alabama Sunrise. This one I'm hoping to get many good seed from.

Of course, being so excited, I forgot to take pictures until after they were potted. The plants are huge, the roots are huge. Fantastic plants all the way around.

The 7gal pot with one fan and the 3gal are Italian Kaleidoscope. The 2fans in the 7gal pot are Lillian's Alabama Sunrise:

I also got a package in from Ken Johnson, aka Kendaylily. I got three fans of Fox Hunter which were very big full grown plants. . I bought 2 sets of seedlings. I bought 2 packages of seedlings last fall that I received before he stopped shipping for the winter. The 2 sets that I got in today were 2 additonal purchases. The reason I'm telling you this, these are small seedlings. I knew they were small. He shows pictures of the size of the seedling on the Lily Auction. Since I had already gotten 2 sets of these seedlings, there was no surprise in them being small. If I feed and water generously, they will bloom next year. I am well pleased with his plants and his seedlings. I will probably buy more this fall. Another, Happy happy purchase!!

The first photo is of 3 fans of Fox Hunter:

I'm tired and happy that it's raining nice and slow. No storm so far. I sure hope none of the folks in south Ms or over in Louisianna have any really bad weather. It look ruff on the radar at 6pm.

The seedlings look great. I won a few seedlings a few yrs ago and was very disappointed I believe that couldn't have been a year old. Very small Sad

I am excited about getting new plants in but I am working on a new area and need to hold off a few wks. My sister and I are also going to Fl the first wk of April so I will hold off on planting or digging orders until we are back.

I love this weather but mid 80s in Mar, makes me worry about having a late freeze like the one we had a few years ago in April. I cut back hosta, daylilies and lost a nice Japanese maple Sad

Hi Teresa, I've always gotten great plants from Ken. He has pictures posted on the LA under his ID showing the size and he gives the "date of birth" on the auction listing.

I have bought many seedling on the LA and 98% were the size listed. Just remember that a 3-6 month seedling can be 16" tall and it will take atleast a full year before bloom in most areas. Also, if these seedling don't get some TLC they may not bloom for 2 years. Now, if you happen to have one of Fred's 6 month old seedlings they'lll be BLOOMING!!!! But, we all know just how special Fred is and he has that Magic touch to grow seedlings to bloom in 6 months. An amazing thing.

I think that the grower really should show pictures of the seedlings if at all possible or atleast a photo of something similar. I bought some seedlings earlier this year with a statement of them being nearly 18 months old and they were. They were huge plants and I was very happy. I showed pictures above of them.

If you ever have any doubts about a Auction seller, you could ask on here. You should get a good answer unless the seller is really new.

Blessings, Mona

Though we have never gotten seedlings from Ken Johnson, we have been very pleased with his registered daylilies on the Lily Auction.

Teresa, I well remember the freeze you are referring to. It was Easter Sunday in 2007 (I think 2007). It was like 24 degrees here. Everything had bloomed out like this year, and then came that devasting freeze. I had already cleaned out the daylily beds and had new foliage up. I had to cut all the daylily foliage back and clean out the beds a second time once the freeze came. Japanese maples and other shrubs' new growth were killed and set back a year. I am leary that this could happen again this year. It is just too early for this warm weather. The dogwoods, evergreen azaleas, a few deciduous azaleas, and much more are in full bloom now. Once the rain comes tonight and tomorrow and washes off the pollen, I will take some pictures and post them here on ATP.

We could use the rain. I could really use a reason to stay inside, so I can work on our income tax!

Hi Doris,

I remember that freeze really well. We lost a beloved Japanese maple that we'd loved and tended for 10 years. It was a weeping red one that had gotten about 5' tall and 6' wide. It was beautiful. That freeze caused all the bark to burst and it was dead in 2 years. The woods around us probably had 20-30 trees die from that freeze. It was a really bad freeze. I think we had maybe 4 days that it didn't get above 32 degrees for the high after have 80s in March just like this year. Let's all pray that the warmth is here to stay and add a little PS to that prayer that it won't be 120 in July!!!

I went out to the greenhouse for a couple of hours today and still managed to get all our laundry done. I also got caught up on my spreadsheets that I keep for seed records. I'll have to finish all my labels tomorrow.

Blessings to all, Mona

Raised bed with sand and bark - we knew something was up when we see leeks shipped.

We poor growers in the north with our short seasons can't compete for size, nor increase.

Only thing I'll add is that most all leeks arrive big and then have to convert to northern conditions and get set back a year.

I personally would like to see people get over the thought that "Bigger is better." It is a healthy root system that determines how well the plant does in your garden. Some plants make naturally small fans, my Keystone Harvest Moon being one of them.
