Richard ~ Are you feeling well enough to work in your garden? Or will you be potting the new ones until it cools off and planting them later?

Evelyn, i would be potting them till it cools off in or around October. This will give me time to prepare the beds.

I've narrowed this down to my top 6...




If you asked me again on another day, I'm sure my list would be different.

**Update** - I've checked out more photos of Sassy Tart and it doesn't look as good as it does in the NGA photo, so I am removing it from my must have list.

I would be interested in any Iris that you are thinking about thinning out or throwing. I have several now spread throughout my flower beds but would like to dedicate an area just to Iris. I would be willing to pay for rhizomes and for shipping.

Jeanne ~ It is too late to be sending irises to you in your area. Send me a tree mail now, for next year's wants. If I have them to spare I will send for postage. Just look at my "have list:. I don't know which ones will multiply faster than others.

I follow your "What did you do in the Iris garden today" forum everyday. I don't comment very often. I have been making lists of Iris' by color, by the names that you name your beds and so on. The Iris' are all so beautiful. I had several perish due to rot and got somewhat discouraged until I read that most of you Iris lovers also have that problem at one time or another. I really would like to start an Iris bed in this area of my garden that has NOID white Iris along the back fence and a row of purple NOID Iris somewhat in the center. This year I had potatoes and onions in part of it and my vining vegetables in the front.


The area I am talking about is behind the tree and to the right where the playground is which is now gone.

I wish I could trade you named varieties, but unfortunately, all my named varieties were planted not even two months ago. I do have plenty of noids though that are quite nice if ya might like some. They look old and most have been closely resembling old historics.

Most iris vendors are done for the season like popular vendors like Superstition, Schriener's and more, but, there are a few iris sites still in business, but that time is very quickly running out. If you want to get in a quick order, you may have to be fast.

I actually purchased from this company and they were very friendly and sent me exactly what I wanted, and a few extras for no extra charge. The rhizomes were all very healthy too.

Argyle Acres (Wautoma, Wisconsin) - I do not know if it is open or not for iris orders, but there is no indication that orders are finished for the year that I see.

I've looked far and wide, and I tried to give you a little list of iris vendors still selling. The only one I know for certain is still selling is Winterberry Iris Gardens. Most vendors reopen for iris sale after the bloom season, so, around June through August. Maybe you can catch a few orders then? Save up! You might find quite a lot you like!

Even still, if you cannot make a purchase, there are still several folks here that I am sure would not mind sending in a late box. Good luck with your iris hunting and planting!

Jeanne ~ At the top of the list of threads in the Irises Forum is a huge list of vetted vendors. But personally, if I lived in zone 5, I do not think that it is recommended that you plant irises this late, since they must have time to get established before winter sets in. When is your first frost? I'll let others advise you that live in colder zones than I do, as they are more knowledgeable about the garden conditions in your zone.

Maybe Tom @tveguy3 or Arlyn @crowrita1 might have some good advice regarding this matter.

I have planted as late as the end of September, but, personally, I wouldn't plant even that late, if It wasn't "an emergency situation". The plants need, at least in my soil, at least a month of "good growing" before things shut down for winter, and, as you know, Zone 5 is "very unlikely" to get that. I have had pretty good luck with August planted (which seems to be when a lot of vendors ship) but, "June & July" works a lot better...yeah, it's hot and dry, but , a person can always stretch out the hose . There are also a few vendors who will "spring ship", and that has worked well for me, too.

I have the best luck, by potting the new arrivals, and only "transplanting them" into the beds after they have made a good root system. Being in pots, it's easy to move them to a "half-day" of shade situation, when it gets *really* hot.

Thanks Evelyn, I think I will order a few from Winterberry Gardens. Next time I will wait until the Iris are done blooming before getting more.

@crowrita1 Thanks Aryln for your help and precious experience. I will plant these in pots and keep them outside as long as possible before it turns too cold for them. I can keep them under lights if need be so they can develop their roots. I know I really should have waited until June or July but it is hard to control anxiousness. Hopefully it will work out okay. I'm going to order 8 new ones. So I won't have that many to pot up and care for. My new ones are:

There are so many beautiful Iris, it was really hard to pick but I tried to stay with Violet and white this time. Plus they were pretty reasonable in price.

Jeanne ~ I know how frustrating it is to wait. I should have done all this iris gardening 20 or 30 years ago, when I had more vim and vinegar! Now I am old and am looking forward to spring and new irises....well, I got almost all of them planted. There are a small few that need to go in pots and flower beds.

Jeanne, that is a nice order. I especially like Doctor Dark and Enchanted Mesa.

Yes, there are still some irises that I want to grow. However, I can wait until I cull a few, as there is no more "room at the inn"!

I tried Alakazam...along with about 8 other Arilbreds this year. I think one made it and it's struggling. Nothing wrong with the rhizomes when I got them, this was all "operator error". I hope you have better luck!
