My neigbor asked me: (I can't)
Can anyone tell me what this lily's ID is. Its in a catalog that only says Oriental Lily Picotee. Company is Garden Alive Inc. I tried to look it up in the database.

Thumb of 2012-03-16/mnorberry/919517

White-tinged blooms with bold pink-red edges and tiny speckles adorning centers. Sweet fragance.
I know when you order from an unknown company they sometimes put a different name on them.

Grrrroan.....

And I don't see any spots...

Brazilia/Brasilia is similar but has spots:

Lily (Lilium 'Brazilia')

Nippon:

Lily (Lilium 'Nippon')

None of these photos in the data base are photo-shopped like the one in the Garden Alive catalog. Pink picotee edges will spread over the petals as blooms age. In hot summer climates there may be very pale or no pink edges. Soil probably makes a difference too.

You won't find a picture in our data base that looks like that unless it was provided by commercial companies and inserted without our moderation. Some of those photos are photo shopped to look better than they really look in the garden.

Looking around a bit more... apparently there is an unregistered lily being sold by this name.

Well, Connie you were right. My neigbor's bulbs came in with the packaging stating "Brazilia". It was from Beck's. It would be nice if the companies that sell items use their proper names.

Mike, I think this stuff happens more than we might think. Thats why I only will buy from a grower source or a single source. Chances are tho, you're neighbors source never knew himself the stock was wrong.

Photo below copied more lavender picotee than the actual catalog picture which is much more pink picotee.. Copy is in recognition of and courtesy for: B&D lilies, Fall 2009 reference guide.

I really can't tell the difference between Hotline and Millesimo (this is the correct, registered spelling). Maybe if they were each grown side by side under the same conditions, there would be a difference.

Maybe, maybe not. Sometimes my digital camera exaggerates contrasting edges on lilies, for example, on the trumpet Tropical Isle. Other times my photo looks more correct. The point is, when the color does not come out right they fail to correct it. Better to fool the customer into buying it in my opinion.

Both Hotline and Millesimo are registered in the kavb and Millesimo is also registered in the RHS lily register. They have different registrants, hybridizers, dates. There is a slight difference in color of the edges according to the comparisons to the RHS color guide. Hotline is described as shorter and with a much smaller flower (~7.5 inches vs. ~10 inches). All of these details are things that don't show up in vendor descriptions, nor discernible in photographs.

It is all plenty confusing, that is why I use registers as my first resource. But that doesn't mean much when the dutch take a registered lily, give it another name and then register it as a different lily.

I have also seen where the dutch sell under a temporary name while they wait for approval of a registered name. I have seen this documented here and there in the RHS Lily Register. But for the most part, I suspect these tricks are not documented anywhere, at least not in registers we have access to. Makes for lots of fun...

Anyway, if we get photos of lilies that look exactly alike but different names I treat them as different until I find some sort of authoritative evidence that they are the same, then use additional cultivar names for database purposes. It gets kind of grueling at times.

Thanks, Polly. That is a moral booster for me. But I am sure there are some mistakes in there, nothing is perfect. We need knowledgeable people to come along and recognize mistakes and submit proposals for corrections; that is how it is supposed to work. It has worked that way a few times. Thumbs up

I asked my source for clarification. This is what he said:
Hotline used to be called Purple Fountain, it was bred by Erwin at Makbreeding, There is also another variety called 'The Edge; it is a Sister variety, looks identical to me !!

Millesimo was bred by Vletter den Haan, much bigger flowers than Hotline, lovely pink edge, if flowered under warm condition, but the flowers can be pure pink if they come open in colder conitions. For this reason Vletters have given up on this breeding line.

So they are indeed different lilies.

So, if I follow this thread correctly, both mnorberry's neighbor and pixie62560 either ordered or received packages marked Brazilia but what they both actually ended up getting was either Mellisimo or Hotline, or possibly but less likely, Purple Fountain.

So, what else is new! At least the error was consistant between two random recipients which tends to indicate an error upstream before the end seller(s). Then there's the added confusion of renaming.

At least both of them are very pretty and probably would compliment each other together in some fashion.
