Daylily Proliferations

By Shelly
March 17, 2012

Hemerocallis will sometimes set proliferations. Once these little plants show up on a scape, and a root begins to emerge, remove the proliferation, and either plant it in a small container, keeping it moist but not wet, or put the proliferation into water with the crown above the water line. You will get a new little plant that may eventually reward you with blooms identical to the plant it was taken from.

The first time I saw one of these I was SO surprised.
Thought it was from another planet entirely!

Found one on a sisyrinchum the other day.

Because the proliferations are hard to spot among the foliage, and it is sometimes hard to remember where they are (old timers disease), I put a stake with a tag beside the prolif and clip the tag and stake to the scape. I like to let them keep growing as long as the scape is green. I do a little dance when I find one, because a free plant is something to dance about!

Anyone have a picture showing it on the plant?
