Hi, Char.

Is this beautiful plant winter hardy for you, or do you bring it inside?

Hi chelle,

No, none of the passi's are winter hardy here in Vermont, they all come inside. Once the temps are above a low of 45 degrees F they can go back out.

Thanks, Char.

So, you just keep them indoors in a dormant state, or do they need plant lights over the winter? I'm asking because my fella would really like me to grow one, and I just need to know what to expect before I begin. I don't have much indoor space.

chelle,

I don't have much prime ( window) indoor space either. The passi's always stress coming in by loosing the majority of their leaves, they put out typical weak growth inside seen in low light situations. I've never tried them under lights but would think lights would help,if a nice sunny situation is not available. Once they can go outside - I should have said that the temp goes no lower than 45F for the ones I grow - they get a trim and will put on much healthier growth. The best I can recommend is to ask/read about the growing conditions for the one(s) you choose. Passi's can differ greatly in what they prefer - lowest temp for instance, some will tolerate lows to 45F, others no lower than 60F and at least one is said to be hardy to zone 5. Size may be another consideration, some grow very tall. How you want to display them, pots or hanging basket etc.I've found passi's to be reasonably priced, so should you loose one or just grow as an annual they are not expensive to replace. The blooms are spectacular and the variety in leaf shapes is pretty incredible too.

Thank you so much!

I overwintered a tropical plumbago in the crawlspace under the house this winter; it seems like that might work for a borderline passi as well. Smiling

I grew an "Incense" last year (sooooo pretty!) and waited a bit too long to bring it indoors. Thought it was a goner for sure this spring so I planted some other goodies in the pot. But I do believe I'm seeing it resurrect! Certainly looks like little passi shoots coming up in that pot! Wonder how well it will get along with marigolds........? Smiling

P. Incense is said to tolerate slightly colder temps than P. Inspiration even though they are both crosses of P. incarnata x P. cincinnata from different breeders. Both are now out on the deck here and I noticed buds forming today. I would think Incense will do fine climbing above marigolds, sure will be pretty blooming together!

Oh, I was just wondering if there's room for both in that pot!
That's interesting that they're both from the same cross. I thought it looked like Incense when I clicked on the photo!

woofie,
What size pot? Mine live in 10"clay pots year round, get refreshed with new mix every spring a few weeks before they go outside. Thanks Sherry!

Mmmm, I'd have to go measure it....and it's waaaaaaay too hot outside to do that! Hilarious! .....but it's at least 12" and probably at least that deep. I stuffed a few marigolds around the edge to remind me to water that empty looking pot. Green Grin! I looked at it a bit more closely and I'm sure that what I'm seeing is the passiflora coming back. Hurray! Really surprises me because the other one I brought in at the same time (Lavender Lady) started putting up shoots at least 2 months ago. I'd been told not to give up too soon on a dead looking passi, and I guess it's true! Smiling
