Hi All,
I just wanted to add that Sisyrinchium is related to Irises. They do well in the same conditions as bearded irises do. They clump up like irises do, tiny clumps of course compared to iris. The do reseed, and it is easy to accidentally weed the seedlings out out since they do have a grass like appearance.

I think they're trying to tell us something, Clint; maybe, "leave us out of the garden"... Whistling

Mine's still waiting to be planted. We're still having freezing temps at night, and I'm too chicken to put it out yet.

I think the native is much hardier than the hybrid.
I use them as little iris in the fairy garden.

These plants hate too much water, so plant them in an area where the soil is quite dry.

Great advice here!!!

After a few years of unsuccessfully trying to grow this plant, I'm convinced that it has finally found a happy home here. Big Grin It's planted under a fairly thin-leaved rose bush, at the edge of a slope. Hurray!

Thanks so much, everyone!
Thumbs up

Jonna, are you still selling seeds? I bought a wonderful selection from you a few years back. do you have the blue-eyed grass? Some of the seeds you were selling are still totally unavailable here in the states. Thumbs up

Cindi, I still sell seeds, although I think about stopping. It's a lot of work.
I do have seeds of the Blue-eyed grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium), see www.seedsite.eu

I must have the wild breed. They grow like weeds in my rock garden. I am constantly pulling them out when I weed. I can tell what is a weed vs Blue-eyed because they grow in a clump.

If I want it to stay in a spot I leave it. But it really likes the lean rock dry area.

I have this in a flower bed that gets full sun and quite a bit of water, and it had done great! Maybe it just depends on where you live regarding the water? I planted a Monarda next to it without thinking, and the Monarda seems to want to be watered every couple of days. So, the Blue-eyed Grass is also getting watered that often, and hasn't suffered at all from it. It's very arid where I live, so maybe that is why it has survived with all that water?

I'm glad to know that it's easy to start from seed, so I'll be giving that a try next winter! I don't think it's reseeded for me, but it's possible that I've pulled up seedlings, thinking it was grass.

Mine looks to be making seeds now. I think I'll try to collect them and start them in a container this fall.

We have some growing wild & native on our property so I harvested some seed. I have planted them & it took them 21 days to sprout. I have a bunch of babies now. I understand that when faced with competition of other grasses & such as is the case on our property that they tend not to clump or thicken or show up as much. But when planted as "plants" in a bed or such they really "pop" & become clumping & larger than when faced with competition.
I am a strong believer in the simple fact is that what matters in this life is how we treat others. I think that's what living is all about. Not what I've done in my life but how I've treated others. ~~ Sharon Brown
