When we add alternative common names and cultivar names to the database, the system seems to give preference to the last one added instead of the first one. I know that can be corrected by the use of a thumbs-up for the proper one, but wouldn't it be better if the system gave preference to the first name entered? When we add a new plant to the database, after all, we're asked to list the primary common name. Later, if we add another common name, it becomes the primary name that's shown in the genus lists.

I agree I constantly have to remind myself to double-check the entry and give that thumbs up to reset it.

My problem is that I'm approving lots of miscellaneous proposals of additional cultivar names for the Clematis database, but once I've approved a long list of additions, I don't have a record of what they were, and the person who submitted them does have that record in her personal messages, but she can't give cultivar names a thumbs-up because she isn't a moderator.

When the clematis and rose databases were moved over from Cubits, the system gave a thumbs-up to the top name on the list across the board, but any new plant entered in those databases needs a manual thumbs-up and I sometimes overlook that step in the approval process.

Also, although I might be mistaken, I think the system alphabetizes some of the lists of alternative cultivar names so that the preferred name is not necessarily at the top anymore. So a blanket thumbs-up for the top name would create some problems now, but it would be helpful if the system were to keep the first name entered as the preferred one when other names are added from now on.

I go in and give the primary name a thumbs up just as soon as I approve it. It doesn't take that long. Maybe Dave can go through once in a while and give the primary names a thumbs up. Seems like that is how it was when we first started but new additions don't have the thumbs up.

While I agree that it doesn't take that long, it can be overlooked, and I've already explained that the alphabetization that sometimes occurs would eliminate a periodic blanket thumbs-up to the top name as a true solution.

There are cases in which I've added a rose, listing all of the cultivar names with the main one at the top, and alphabetization then puts it at the bottom of the list, so the system uses it as the primary name and I have felt no need to reinforce that with a thumbs-up. If a blanket thumbs-up is now given to all of the top names, those entries would be incorrect.

I can't think of any case in which the latest name added should be assigned preference over the first name added, so it seems to be something requiring a programming solution.

This was a simple fix. Starting now, if no thumbs have been given to the common names (or if there is a tie), it will revert to giving preference to the first common name, rather than the last. Smiling
