Let's have a bunch of photos of gingers! My dear sister-in-law just sent a photo of a strange plant that I can only guess to be some kind of ginger. The leaves look that way, the flowers are????? purple with bright yellow bits! I'll see if she can post the photo here----

I had several gingers in one bed, most of them required full sun and as the neighbor's trees have grown, that bed now only gets a few hours of sun. The only one that is doing well is the variegated shell ginger, I think it is Alpinia zerumbet. I'm going to move it when I can get some help to the upper bed where its height isn't a problem. Now it is kind of a pain as it hangs over the lounge chairs.




The heliconia in that bed has not come back well, not enough sun. The one in another bed, which gets much more sun, is going well though and blooming like crazy right now. I don't know which one it is.



My shampoo ginger is in the same bed with the heliconia. It has died back during the dry season but is now sending out lots of new stalks. Here are a couple of pictures from November when it was blooming.

Yes, it is a heliconia. Kind of related to gingers in my mind, they seem similar. Plus, I am so happy with all the blooms that I wanted to post the picture

Yes, they're all related under Zingiberales. Includes bananas, costas and more. Here's some of mine. There's a few Alpinias and some Costas I haven't included.

These are called Beehive Gingers here. I've a couple of different colours.


Cucurma australasica, our local native one. My C. rubescens hasn't flowered yet.


Torch Ginger. I have a couple of small white ones as well.

Your shell ginger has much prettier blooms than my variegated one. The blooms on mine are pretty nondescript, it's the foliage that makes it dramatic. I still had the mariposa ginger (Hedychium coronarium) last year but it hasn't come back, not enough sun perhaps. I love the smell of it and I may have to get some and put it in a pot. I'm just now seeing the blooms being sold on street corners so I guess mine really isn't here anymore.

I really love both of those 'dancing ladies'. The link you mentioned says you can grow them from seed, I wonder how hard it is. I can get seeds sent to me here and if it only needs 50% sun I have the right environment. I'm going to search for a seed source. Anyone know one that is reliable?

Hope all of you haven't abandoned this thread. I have a question about one of my hedychiums. I have a huge clump of the cultivar 'Dr. Moy' which is a lightly variegated one with pale orange flowers and a lovely scent. This is the 3rd or 4th year I've grown them, and they've always been beautiful and dependable.

This year, they are much taller than they've ever been - usually they're 4 to 5ft. but this year nearly 7ft. Also they're making stems with different variegations. See pics.

I'm just wondering if any of you have grown this type, and if you've seen the variegation change like this?

LoL! I know, that's what everybody says. I'm kind of hoping I can propagate the left one. On the right one, the creamy half of the leaves burns in the sun. Not so great for Florida.

But I don't want to lose the original cultivar. Do you think maybe I should cut out and isolate the sports?
