Most of my tomatoes have some nice flower buds now. Our weather has been terrible and we are dealing with below normal temps + lots of snow. I wish spring would arrive. Sad to have another late springThumb of 2011-04-17/Joannabanana/ddeb82

Those plants are huge, Joanne. When did you start them?

Frost warning here tonight. I stashed my 2 to3" tall WSown tomatoes in the garage for the night. I don't care much about anything else, but I have to have my 'maters.

Yours look great, Joanne.

Frost warning here, also. I don't have my tomatoes out yet, but I put the cover back lightly on my cold frame. Hope everything else will be ok. Most of my open WS containers are packed tightly in between my earthboxes, so hopefully that will give them a little extra protection.

Below freezing here too. I started some of the tomatoes end of February and some mid March. I hope they last in the pots they are in until I can plant them in the ground. There are about 40 different varieties. Should be quite the selection if we get some good summer weather.

We were planning 8 tomato plants this year. I wintersowed them, and thanks to weather, they're still tiny. My husband planted them into their garden bed last Saturday. The fierce midwest storms and endless rain just keep coming. The storm a few days ago was so bad, the winds so fierce, it stripped ALL the leaves from one tomato plant. Now, it's just a little stick.

I can't get anything done outside. My beds are still covered in weeds (i.e. volunteer plants). I don't expect to have much of a garden this year.

I finally gave up trying to weed by hand, and brought out the round-up (hanging head).

My tomatoes are still in 4" pots--keep bringing them in and out to try to avoid the storms. I noticed today my Sweet Millions (cherry-type) have actual tomatoes on the plants. Do you suppose I can actually get tomatoes without ever planting them? Hilarious!

This is just getting silly. My garden looks like a jungle, none of my containers are planted, and some of my vegetables aren't even planted. I'm not optimistic about this growing season. How are things where you're at, Allison?

with the weeks of rain we had ... the garden it's self looks great.. seedlings are all struggling from lack of sun.. even some plants I bought are having a hard time.. but seems the perennials are loving it .. very odd year here... have a feeling the annuals will not be my shining stars this year

I've even had trouble finding a good selection of annuals at the nurseries here. I think the weather may have even affected the growers. I had to go to 3 nurseries to find my 'Black and Blue' salvia, and it was double the price I usually pay for it. Guess it's a challenging season all over.

At this rate, it will be September before I get any ripe tomatoes.

I'm not sure I'll ever get to weed and mulch. I really should have hired someone to mulch this year. I just didn't expect this weather. We've never had rain like this. We've broken all records.

I only wish I would have gotten a little more weeding done before the mulch went down today. I can only hope the little weeds get smothered.

I just brought the planter in and kept it under lights all winter.. it got invaded with mealy bugs.. I cut it back and sprayed the dickens out of it with alcohol.. a few weeks later it died back.. I added some more systemic since I had nothing to loose... added a few seeds in since I was not sure if it was going to come back or not.. don't even remember what I stuck in there.. LOL and then it popped back up like nothing ever happened.. I even had a petunia that stayed ok in the same planter.. was either blue denim or one of those.. but it's more purple then blue... looks like another salvia is growing in there now as well hope it's not red Whistling

Hi there... just joined - I'm a tomato lover who lives in southern California. I was hoping to find someone who might have some 'Purple Haze' or 'Purple Dog Creek' tomato seed and some experience growing these two varieties. Nancy
