Growing Unusual Fruits and Vegetables from the Grocery Store

By Bubbles
December 15, 2011

Have you ever wandered through a grocery produce section and wondered how some of the more exotic fruits and vegetables are grown and how they should be prepared? I recently roamed the aisles of a local grocery that caters to our city's growing international transplants. I had never seen so many root vegetables that were unknown to me. My husband wasn't along and therefore could not be embarrassed by his wife, so I asked permission to photograph some of the produce with my phone. The produce manager smiled and said, "People do it all the time."

Coincidental that you should post this just now...lol...I was given a dragon fruit seedling at an RU several years ago...tiny thing..and I've just let it grow, not bothering to wonder if it would produce fruit or not. Then today I noticed that it's growing quite well and decided to come in and see if I can expect it to bear or not....and here's your article! Thanks!

I hope yours bears fruit. I've had mine for a few years now, and all it does is climb and look gangly (like a teenage boy!). If it does, i hope you'll post a pic. The blooms are gorgeous, so I hear. Sad

I hope so too! Many, many years ago when I was looking for epiphyllums, I stopped at one nursery and asked about them...the guy actually did not know what they were, but showed me an "orchid cactus". I said, well, that's an epi and I took it. I don't remember how long it was in a pot on the other property, but we've been at this place for 15 years, it's climbed up through a tree and NEVER bloomed. I didn't think that was possible...lol..

There's a place here in town that grows dragon fruit for sale and their website has some impressive pics....

I also grew my pink Dragon Fruit for many years before it produced.
They like to be fertilized and they love water.
yes I know they are a cactus...
but if you want fruit you need to water 'well' during their growth period.
They need to climb, but not too high. You do need to reach them for picking.
For me they only make fruit on the branches that are HANGING DOWN.
My trellis is an 8 foot tall tripod with cross beams 2 feet below the top.
Happy gardening.

I'll remember this this summer, Orchid Bob. I've yet to get any fruit from mine, but i do have some very tall tuteurs I can use for them to climb on!
