The gardens on either side of the Garden Shed have expanded since 2005, however, it remains barren in the front. I would love for the shed to be more inviting. I would love to have a path leading to the entrance, but that is out of the question. Do you have suggestions for either side of the door, remember that the door will need to open to the right all the way. I'm hoping for a shrub backbone surrounded by a few perinneals and bulbs.
Also, for the first time last summer, I was invaded by deer so 'deer proof' has now become a part of my vocabulary.

An updated photo of the sunny garden to the south of the shed. There is a shade/hosta garden to the north. The shed faces east.
Somehow in one year I managed to put in that garden, whew, I can't imagine doing that now. So I'll stick with improving just the front of the shed. lol

The pine tree has grown ... it began as one of those stick trees that your children bring home from school on Arbor Day.

That shed is so cute, and the garden is gorgeous! Something dwarf would be nice on the right where the door opening wouldn't be an issue. There are some cute dwarf Forsythias on the market that could work nicely, and I think some are variegated, which would be nice for all season interest. Blue Mist shrub has a long bloom season in summer, and those typically don't get too big. There are variegated forms of those too.

On the left side, perhaps a flat trellis with a vine would work well, so that the door could open all the way.

Neil, I've actually planted Caryopteris in the garden next to the shed. I planted 3 small plants one year. They all died. Then last year I started 5 from seed. They were doing great at the end of the summer, but none seem to have survived the winter. Just not the spot for them. Too wet and windy I think. But the dwarf Forsythia sound interesting.

Oh, and I forgot to say I think the trellis idea is fantastic

The idea of a vine on a trellis is great.

What size shrub are you wanting? Is this area sun, part shade or mostly shade? When you said that it was a wet area, I thought about some of the smaller clethras--like Sixteen Candles and Hummingbird. They would bloom white and have a wonderful fragrance in July/August. I don't know if they're deer resistant though.
