This is really probably an elementary question but here goes. I received some hostas in the mail and they got mashed by the mailing service. Grumbling
They have lots of broken leaves and some or all the leaves were broken. Will they resprout this year or do you have to wait until next spring? Will they live? Crying

It is up to you if you want you could ask for new plants from the supplier. Just take some pictures and email them.
Or you can plant them and wait for new leaves to grow, if the roots are ok then the rest is just growth. Seems like the USPS is making thinner boxes. You should have seen the thing I got from Mamajacks but in side all was OK, still looked like someone played football with it. Grumbling
I had a rabbit chew off some leaves on my Paul's Glory and they have already grown back, I just trimmed off the bad leaves and gave it a little fertilizer and water more often. Also I did get a few plants with broken leaves and I did not say anything just trim off the bad leaves and maybe give some diluted Miracle Grow to keep it from going into shock. Actually the diluted Miracle Grow would be nice for all mail order Hosta to prevent the mail-order-shock. I let the bare root Hosta soak in plain water with a pinch of MG for about 24 hours, and then plant or pot them up. None have died so far, also any bare root plant , is good to soak it at least overnight to re-hydrate.

Thank you Susan. I will do that. These were from a co-op, not MJ's, so no recourse. Wish the postal service would be more careful!!! The roots looked really good but I don't know that much about hosta. I will hope for the best. I did pot them up to the next sized pot and watered with transplanter.

They certainly have gone cheap on the boxes, and still they want to stack them high as the sky. There needs to be a new limit on these cheap boxes because the one on the bottom will cave in and they do no even apologize for the condition of the box, just hand it to you like its normal. I looked at her like she was crazy, coming up to my front door with that thing. Glare

springcolor... Plant them -- though I too would take pics, contact the 'seller' and let them know what happened.... BUT the plants will get their second "flush of leaves" and will probably look nice for you this year.... if not, next year.
BUT from what i've read... i'd leave the damaged leaves a lone as long as they are green... if they turn brown, then i'd trim them.

and since you are new to hostas... read on care for your tools and the HVX virus.

I'm sure this forum has a thread on the virus... as you begin to collect hostas, you need to be aware of it.

welcome to the addiction.

I read this this forum all the time. Yep, I keep an eye out for that virus. Well, I did trim the leaves of because they were badly broken. Oh well. Hope for the best. I have hostas but just the standard workhorse ones that have been around of years. Like heuchera the newer ones seem to need a bit more care. Thanks Susan and Terese for your direction. I put them in gallon pots and will baby them a bit. Keep the slugs off!!!

I feel like I am at least 6 weeks ahead of schedule, basically we did not have no winter to speak of. I did some wintersowing first of january and the came up fast and then in march we had two days two weeks apart where we got down to 20 degrees, and most of my sprouts froze. But that was it for the winter, round here. I remember the first ones to come up were 'Sea Thunder' see all three in nursery bed. Nothing else has opened and there are at least forty hosta's in here.
