I have crocus growing in the shade. Also, I have crocus growing in zone 9. I think parts of this proposal are too limited.

The Zones are taken from, for one, Brent and Beckys and there are exceptions, where noted on the individual variety, as with all bulbs.

Of course they do grow in shade, also, but prefer full sun. Part shade can be added.

An interesting and as yet unaddressed issue by the USDA, or anywhere that I have seen is this.

Shade in your zone in California, Zuzu does not approximate shade in say Massachusetts, unless we measure by footcandles.

Just like when they say full sun. I know that full sun in North Carolina is a whole other matter than full sun in Massachusetts!

I agree: Our classification by only 11 zones can be terribly misleading. But I would think that conditions in the sun or shade anywhere are fairly comparable during some seasons, such as late winter and early spring.

Some of the European databases rate heat resistance, not to mention rain resistance, which can be valuable information, especially in the case of rose blooms. The list could go on and on, I suppose. But now I'm just rambling.... Excuse me. Smiling
