Kathy, how do you tell a cym from a den? The plant itself looks the same (little canes, is that what you call them?).

Ah, the term is "spikes" for orchids (scapes for daylilies, etc.)! And it's the foliage that truly differentiate them. Cymbidiums look grassy (see flowerbear's pics) and dendrobiums are typically leafy (typically since there are sooo many types in this alliance-another orchid term for family). See my pic of Den. princess x unicum. I use foliage a lot to figure out what kind of orchid I'm seeing. The more you watch here the better you will get at seeing these aspects. Also it's good to go to orchid shows where you can see the labels and get the schemas in your memory. Also college greenhouses and seller's greenhouses where you can visit over time, say, once a month, help with orchid self-education. Do you have these places to visit? Here's a list I found for the Portland area. http://maps.google.com/maps?oe...

Thanks, Ursula. I hope my Epi. Hokulea comes back, too. I cut it down and repotted it since it was dropping leaves.

I have a question for all of you orchid growers. I just bought a $1.00 orchid. It has no leaves but 3 stems, the tallest is 8" and they are about 1/2" thick. Do you think there is any hope for this plant?

I repotted that orchid I bought, but this is what it looked like then. Can you help me and this plant?

Thanks, all. Smiling I'm doing better this year. Last year many plants died of the dreaded rot. I still can over water and I worry about it constantly now. So hard having this many orchids without a greenhouse in New England. Winters can be dreary for days. I feel kind of insane sometimes, but I can't seem to help myself. Newbies, beware!

Venice, I think I posted this on DG, but you are in for a lesson in patience. And don't forget to say an orchid mantra daily. BTW, my guess is dendrobium. As I get older (and maybe wiser, I can't tell) I've stopped trying to save sick orchids and only buy the healthiest ones. Only Laurel can save them! Where is Laurel?

I did read your post on DG. Thanks! Well, not much is lost if it gives up and doesn't do well. For that price, I thought I would give it a try.
