I received a daylily today from a company I don't think I've ever bought from before. They had one that I couldn't find elsewhere. It looked just as bad as the ones from Wilds. They made a point of saying that they intended to ship their plants "dried" so there would be no chance of molding. I guess everybody is entitled to their own ideas and practices. The plant may eventually look as good as those shipped from growers I consider to be reputable but it sure looks puny beside my other shipments. I don't plan to order from them again. Oh, I almost forgot....they charged quite a bit for shipping this little plant that weighed about 6 ounces.

Ok, I only wondered if it might be one some of us might have, but it's new to me. I'm sure if anyone has it, you'll hear from them.

I'm sorry that you got such a bad plant. Give it a good home, and plenty of water. In a few weeks it should start growing and then you could start adding fertilize to it.

Hope it gives you much pleasure by this time next year and you never know, sometimes daylilies make quick recoveries and bloom this year even when they have been mistreated.

Blessings, Mona

I'm sure it will grow well eventually but this is the first time I've received anything that looks like the Wild's plants. I guess I've really been fortunate with all the others I've purchased through the years from reputable growers and this year with the sellers on the LA. I suppose I was more perturbed that the tiny little plant (2 small roots and about 1/2 inch of plant) actually cost $5.50 to ship and they charged $12.75. It makes Gilbert Wild's look generous!

Yeap, that's a sore spot for most of us. I don't mind paying a little extra on shipping but I have had to pay more in shipping than the whole thing cost, just like you. That stinks. Sometimes, it's necessary if something is really cheap, but most times it's not.

Most of our people end up paying shipping out of their pockets rather than overcharge someone. I got a package in last fall that cost over $40 to ship and I only paid $25. Good folks, most and sometimes, it is very easy to figure what something is going to cost wrong. It happens but you can tell when it's a common thing.

Good luck on your baby, Mona

I mistreat my daylilies on a pretty regular basis and they always continue to thrive.
I would put them in some very fertile soil, water them well, and let them do their thing.
Would consider changing suppliers, though.

I left some seedlings, that were supposed to go in the combost bin, laying on top of the ground all winter. Guess what, when I went to pick them up, they had rooted themselves in the ground. I had to practically dig them up all over again. Daylilies sure are hardy little things aren't they??

I've had similar experiences.
Ain't they grand?!?!

This year it was an iris atop the compost pile (I thought it had rotted) that put up greenery...

I sure hope it grows well for me too since the company I bought it from was the only place I've ever seen it. I e-mailed the company to express my disappointment.....tried to be tactful but they probably won't ship to me any more. My family is always telling me to think before I speak.

DD, if you were tactful and just expressed your disappointment then I see nothing wrong, why should you be expected to accept a plant that does not live up to your expectations. I'm sure in this instance from what you wrote, that you did indeed think before you spoke. Group hug

Well, I got my Free Wheelin' from Wild's today. Now I will say mine looked a little better than DD's but I think that is because mine had been potted up in this tiny pot and then in this bag and it had been moistened.

The bonus plant looked pretty sad and I was a bit disappointed to be be truthful that it was Happy Returns. The roots were very dry out. Even my son thought so and he knows nothing about plants!

Claudia, I'd have to say that the bonus plants you got look larger. more numerous and healthier than the plants I paid full price for last year. They were small single fans then and this spring I had to hunt to find a couple of them. I'm estimating a full four or five seasons before they start to look like a normal clump of daylilies.

I just stumbled across this thread and had to read it. Buying from Wildes is like buying from Walmart... too many mislabeled. They do look dried, assuming they were shipped bareroot? Soak in willow water for awhile, if you do keep them when you plant make sure you label them and note it and when they bloom if they are not true give them a call, or two. I have gotten from them and a few other growers (I will not mentionI ) , and they came really dried out like that, that I saoked them for awhile and planted in a mix with the food right in it. And they took off many did bloom the first year. Size, I do not worry about, Bought lots from Maryott but most of them are huge and shrink to dinky size and just dont do well until the third year... if they are still around. I think it is the climate. I try and buy from northern growers , much smaller plants but they multiply faster and do very good. One exception I have had is Abundant Daylilies........ Mark sends huge fans and for some reason they do not shrink like the Maryott daylilies, Mark's are coming from down south, I always had a problem with southern ones like the Maryott lilies shrinking and doing poorly. I wonder why?

What I found odd was that they had potted up the Free Wheelin' and the bonus plant was just thrown in the box bare root as shown. Shrug!

Right on the Home Page of their website it states that the daylilies are fresh dug right before they are shipped and it is easy to tell that is not the case! I also just noted that nowhere does it state if plants are 1 fan or 2. I think that is what disappointed me the most, that it was just one fan. Yet the bonus was 4 small fans.

I planted the Free Wheelin' in a spot that I can watch it and check on it easily. The Happy Returns was put in a pot. Hopefully it will bloom happily!

I just stumbled upon this thread. I never heard of 'Wildes'. I googled Wildes to see who they were and I was directed to the Watchdog and they have 52 negative reviews. Seems like they are going down hill, only 3 are from this year but mostly because not many people are posting there anymore. If you include the negatives here he might have 10!. Also in the past he has sent a lot of wrong plants and that did not help either.
I actually got some fans just like these from Mary's Garden Patch. I ordered them around the first of July and waited 3 months for them to send these 15 single fans. I was expecting stuff like I got from other companies in my zone. Not so, they looked almost like the above and I was horrified, especially after getting fans from Marriotts,( the standard for daylilies). These were all dormant, if she were in Canada or something, I could understand. These plants did not come from a company in my zone. These came from up North somewhere. I didn't appreciate that, In zone 8 you can go out in November and dig big green fans like Maryott does. I look up companies to see where they are, so if I order from zone 8 then I want zone 8 plants, not zone 4 plants.
I did post pictures of this mail order on perennials forum. Everyone up north said they were normal, actually the roots are big. They are just dormant. I have nothing against dormant plants.
