Is the color blue a problem taking pictures? I always thought it was the hot pink/reds which are problematic, at least I find them most difficult to capture correctly.

I think if my nancy Chandler gives up (In bad shape) I need Renanthera monachica! How great is that? (about the Dendrochilum wenzelii). My Twinkle always struggles.

Ursula, I love seeing the whole plant pictures..it must be a production when you move everyone outside, getting the roots untangled from their neighbors!
Is the Dendrochilum wenzellii a demanding plant? Is it much larger than the tolumnia? I really like how the flowers fall, so graceful!

D. wenzelii is so easy for me and it's compact-medium sized and the tolumnia I believe is a mini. Ursula, can tell you more.

Yes, I agree with Todd. Can't decide on a favorite.

Fred, DD graduated in '07, a year early, with double majors in Latin American Studies/American Studies and emphasis in cultural history and preservation. She had a year's credit going in 'cause she entered from high school with an International Baccalaureate Diploma (double higher levels in 3-D art and languages). Her preservation research work was published while at Smith. Since graduation she continues to research and write for publication, including an article in the compendium to the National Geographic, Ken Burns, National Parks series on PBS, as well as a forward to a DIY restoration book. She received her Master's in American Studies and certification in Preservation from G.W.U. last May and is a Preservation Historian with the National Register (one of the people who reviews and recommends nominations to the National Register. She's packed a lot in in just twenty four years! She has the Preservation Station cubit here but has not had much time to devote. We are enormously proud of her accomplishments! Hurray! Forgive my lapse into bragging. Lovey dubby *Blush* Smith is a great school because of its great women. Alumnae Gloria Steinhem's commencement speech says it all. http://www.smith.edu/collegere... Their engineering school is first rate. Seemed like every engineering grad that year either got a Fulbright, a Ford Foundation or National Science Foundation fellowship. Okay, Kathy, you can have your cubit back. Big Grin

Regarding the size of Tolumnia Sniffen - most of the growth on this plant is just a bit past the mini stage.
About the Dendrochilum wenzelii - I find all my Dendrochilums easy to grow and the spikes emerge with the new growth. This one is about 10 - 12 inches high and can make a nice clump in a few years.

Thanks Ursula and Kathy,
I've been looking at all the different favorite vendors that have been listed, I've seen the Dendrochilums available and am very tempted to get one. I am confident in my Cattalea and Phalenopsis skills but am petrified of killing perfectly innocent helpless other varieties ! It's especially stressful if the plant costs more than a few dollars! If I can keep the Tolumnias alive through the summer, then maybe I'll just dive in!!!

Andy's has Ddc. wenzelii but I was out of Andy's Bucks. It's not listed on the site and I'll cry if anyone orders it before me. Sad I had already ordered Ddc. javarieri. Next time for sure though.

Ursula, I didn't know there were Tols. that are not minis. Is it your conditions or a fact? Are the definitions of mini based on in situ (which is def not your situation)? I'm still puzzling over your extra-endowed Den. aggregatum.

What can I say Laurel? You have a right to be proud. Our GD was on a similar path but did not achieve whatever was necessary to get the Baccalaureate at George. I think she was more concerned with having fun then studying. Everything was always too easy and when it got tough she took less work as an out. Lots of smarts but lacking in ambition to excell. There is another set of genes involved here. Smiling She expected a silver platter to arrive all on its own. We'll see how she handles Smith and its challenges.

Fred, our genes bring us to the place we need to be and not the place our parents and grandparents desire. I'll write write you some suggestions. BTW, what's the cubit term? Cube U? QU? Yeah, I like that one. I'll QU.

Laurel, did I post my Dendrobium aggregatum recently? I myself am puzzled why you would call my plant extra-endowed? Not that it would be a bad thing, I sure would be happy....

Most websites describe Tolumnias as miniature plants. But there are some Tolumnia species listed on Orchidspecies.com which are described as somewhat larger than miniature. But my Sniffen is supposed to be a miniature, I think it has grown simply into a nice plant over the years. And I am not going to squibble either over 6 versus 7 inch leaves. Smiling

Todd, how many posts would you like me to chunk into? Every 100 posts or 150? or 200? I was doing it by date but look what happened this month!! I guess a lot of orchids open in spring!

Kathy, I hope you get to meet her too. On the post thing, I'd say 100 would be doable for all regardless of their internet challenges. I'm just now getting a bit sluggish, but know that others drop out because they can't keep up with dial up.
