This windmill has had a couple of things growing on it through the years. Now it has Lonicera x brownii 'Dropmore Scarlet'. My husband built the very tall (about 10') birdhouse just this year and I put Clematis 'Barbara Jackman' below it.

Thanks OneWish1! It's been a work in progress. I think we've added something every year for the last 8 or so years.

Thank you Bubbles! I have seen very tall "airmail" boxes before. They are cute.

Our neighbor has one way up above there regular mailbox. It is so cute, and it has birds living in it.

I love your windmill, Vickie! I used to have one but the wind literally shredded it one day. Growing vines up it is an awesome idea!

My first-year raised vertical vegetable garden wasn't overly successful. But I look forward to next year.

valleylynn, good to know that birds do nest in those tall ones. I had my doubts. Maybe next year I will see them.

Thanks, Bsavage. It's odd that the wind that powered the windmill destroyed it! I have decided that if the honeysuckle vine ever dies, I am going to plant clematis on the windmill. Bought a couple clematis and have fallen in love with them Lovey dubby

Shadygreenthumb, it is disappointing when something doesn't do what we hoped it would, but as gardeners we are perpetually hopeful that "next year" will be better! Are those cucumbers in there with the marigolds? I like the idea of flowers at the base of your vertical garden.

Vickie, if you like clematis, keep an eye on chefmike's co-ops. I got some very nice clems from him at an amazing price. Smiling

Vickie, There might have been cukes at one time. Each time a plant would die I would replace it. In that small raised garden I have had tomatoes, peppers, okra (which is probably what you see) sweet peas, zucchini and yellow squash. Not at one time, mind you. Marigolds help to deter pests. But I like how it looks, too. They died as well. Lack of sun. :sad I got some tomatoes and peppers but that's about it. Next year, I am going to raise it up one more level of cinder clocks and timbers. It will get tons more sun that way and the soil will be deeper. I will keep trying. I love the challenge. Not enough sun is always a challenge in my yard.

That's an interesting construction technique! What are you using to keep the soil in between the logs? It looks very nice!

Thanks for the tip, woofie!

Cheryl, that sounds like a good plan. More soil probably would be good.

I used both plastic garden mesh and weed cloth secured against the timbers with a staple gun. It lifts the soil off the deck to protect it. It is portable and movable:
