When the hosta "eyes" appear, I mix one part household ammonia with ten parts of water and pour this mixture around the eyes close to the plant. It doesn't hurt the plants, but it does dissolve the eggs that are laid around the roots. It has reduced the slug population noticeably. I also pour the ammonia solution directly on slugs that I see on the deck. Dissolves them right away.

I know you're in OR, but your comment reminded me of my favorite WA t-shirt from my visit there 30 years ago: "Enjoy Washington weather -- ten million slugs can't be wrong!" Hilarious!

Do you suppose that would work poured around the base of dahlias which are also food for slugs here? Then put copper rims around the base to keep the other intruders out?

Use the amonia solution and the counting gets easier.
Did you herd them into groups?

Rolling on the floor laughing I didn't believe what they said about slugs in the Northwest until I lived in WA state for a few years. Now I'm a true believer.

Slug Queens make their own costumes as part of the competition, so something different each year.

Since the lowly slug so revered in Eugene I doubt stuff like Deadline and Corries sells very well there.
