When the hosta "eyes" appear, I mix one part household ammonia with ten parts of water and pour this mixture around the eyes close to the plant. It doesn't hurt the plants, but it does dissolve the eggs that are laid around the roots. It has reduced the slug population noticeably. I also pour the ammonia solution directly on slugs that I see on the deck. Dissolves them right away.

You think I could use it on the soil around my vegetables to kill any eggs? What about spraying on the leaves of the swiss chard? We have tiny slugs which carry a nasty disease (Rat Lung Worm Disease) so cant chance eating any on raw veggies. Just thinking of them makes me want to throw up!!!
It's all about choices.

Jo Ann I just wanted to thank you for this tip. I did this in the spring and it worked like a charm.

No Problem Evan
Amonia is so cheap compared to Slugbegone which never works for me.

I've tried Sluggo, diatomaceous earth, coffee grounds, ... yours is the best by far for me.

I'm going to try your 1:10 ammonia this weekend, in Fall after the rains start, and again in early and late spring! Thanks. I know some places where they congregate

I use the ammonia also. I've been spraying the crowns of the daylilies with 20% solution to dissolve the slug eggs. I experimented with the cheap ones first and they did not bat an eye so I sprayed the others. This is a great article (see link) for cutting down the slug population, scroll down to the bottom and there's a lady who uses 70-80% ammonia and said it is harmless to plants. I am experimenting right now with different plants and so far so good, none seem to mind it. I am cautious about the foliage on the Hostas because I was told nothing over 10% but I am getting ready to experiment with some of the cheap hostas. Also I pour it out (20%) around the stepping stones.

I find some slugs hiding where my concrete paving stones lean against the soil. And I've found egg masses there. I was thinking of 'walking the edges and tilting each stone so I could spray under it.

But I've had few slugs THIS year, so I may save it for egg-laying season, which I think is early fall.

The ammonia is fairly cheap here and I keep a bottle in the Garage, so whenever I see slug trails I go spray or pour. I had them zig zaging over my edgers last week and I mixed up a gallon and went out after dark and poured it over all the stones. They have to come out some time. LOL.

It never occurred to me to douse in the fall.
Must be the congregating is code for something else and eggs appear in spring.
I found sacs around hostas.
I keep a windex spray bottle with solution handy and spray the stragglers on my early morning walk. They like it under the deck where its cool. The have to cross the slate walk to get there.Just a couple of squirts and they dissolve.About an hour later there is another group feeding on the remains. Ghoulish but I dont like holes in my hostas.

Jo Ann, what do the sacks look like?? I am not 100% sure but I think they lay their eggs in the fall so the babies will have something to eat when they hatch. Here is my daylily Partita in early june, there is a baby slug eating it. Sad

I have seen egg saks around the emerging eyes of hosta .I am not familier with breeding habits of slugs, all I know is a spring drench will keep the population down.

That flower looks nasty.

Yuck!!! I mean thanks! I read last night that they can lay up to 100 eggs at a time but most of the time they lay 40 or so. I will check around my hosta crowns tomorrow. Thumbs up
