I never saw the resident spinner, but light and dew or mist conspired to make the huge web stand out clearly.

I agree Hurray! Hurray! Hurray!

there is a trick you can use when you see a spider web you want to photograph. Take a spray bottle with water on mist setting & mist it. I've also seen where photographers use an old sock filled with baby powder & they tap the sock so the powder comes out & coats the web. I have never tried that. I always thought that would be too cruel to the spider. Not sure, but it seems like that would ruin it for them packing their web up whereas water won't b/c rain doesn't. I just don't know about using baby powder.....

It looks BIG.

Thanks!

I was HUGE. It stretched between two uprights that support my car port. I'm guessing roughly 4-5 feet. Quite an engineering feat! I like the regular, symmetrical parts of the web best.

I assume the spinner must have also been big. I'm kind of glad we never met.

I was daydreaming about that spider catching and cocooning my trouble-making and crazy neighbor, like Shelob catching Frodo in Lord of the Rings, but no such luck.

Rick, I wonder if your web builder is/was a golden-silk spider...they build huge webs and are big themselves. I ran through one once while cutting grass...I was covered in the web, but happily the spider didn't end up on me too Blinking Blinking

Ginger,

I don't know, but maybe. I'm deliberately not looking up an image so I won't start looking under branches as I walk around my yard.

I was sitting down outside once, while hiking around West Rock Park in New Haven, when some tiny insect or spider decided that I would be good to drag home to its children. The thing was about the size of a pin head, but I noticed it jumping onto my shirt. I flicked it off gently.

TOO gently. It was back 30-40 seconds later. Flick again.

This time several minutes went by before it could circle around me, getting uphill, get a big running start, and then JUMPing again (onto my shoulder this time). I guess it hoped it could wrestle me to the ground if it got an elevation advantage.

I flicked it off again, but then moved on, in case it had big brothers whose size matched his optimism and determination.

I swear, this little pinhead, almost too small to see, kept grabbing me by my jacket and trying to wrestle me to the ground and drag me home to feed to his or her kiddies.

By the third try, he had me convinced that he had a chance, so I LEFT.
