This lovely, (I think) crabapple was in the garden of a friend in Australia. Does anyone know what variety it is?

Hi suesings, is it possible to get a closer photo of the flowers and leaves? Do you know for sure it's a crabapple, i.e. does it produce small bitter apples? If it does, what colour are they?

The flowers look to be pale pink and semi-double, is that correct? It might be a difficult job as I think there's plenty of varieties of crabapple.

If it's possible to find out which varieties are popularly sold in the area your friend lives in in Aus that could also help, location can be very helpful even if it's been bought at a nursery.

Thanks Bugs, but that's the only photo I've got. It looked like a crabapple to me, the flowers were double, pink-tinted white and the leaves had a very serrated edge. I was visiting him in Gippsland, south east of Melbourne, for the first time, so I don't know about the plant's fruit. His wife, who possibly knew the name, was overseas at the time. I'll try asking him again, he's not the best of correspondents!

I don't know if it is the same one, but 'Brandywine' is spectacular. Here's an old blog post of mine about it.

Yes Kathleen, a beagle indeed (and female)! And I've since been in touch with my friend, it's a Malus ioensis 'Plena', so now we all know! Thanks to all for your comments!

Thanks for the update, it's probably the most commonly planted crab apple tree according to this nursery ..
