Trick with Chinese cyms? Hmmmmm. I use pumice as a medium as Jason Fischer advised me. Sometimes I have bigger lava rocks or aliflor in the bottom and pumice on top. The rest is the same as the other cymbidiums. I put them gradually in full sun for the summer. I make sure they are not rained on more than once a day. I keep them out till freezing. Then I keep them almost freezing all fall on a barn porch where I can close the doors to keep it above freezing. They go into a 50-55 degree F at night room for the winter with fans. I spray them almost daily or every other day lightly. Deeper once a week and fertilize every 3 weeks. This year has been different than last. I have a flush of blooms now but some cyms are starting to spike now! So I'll have a second round hopefully in spring. What's weird is that Golden Elf didn't bloom at all this year. Maybe it's a voodoo thing from Laurel. Hilarious! She really wanted me to divide it and I resisted cause it's a monster now, I probably will have to break the huge terracotta pot it's in, and it just seemed very daunting. Especially after that chain saw dividing video I posted!! Rolling on the floor laughing BTW, I have 19 Chinese Cyms and only about 5 have bloomed so far. I'm waiting for Miss Taipei to do something and I have 2 orange goeringiis (one that I paid a bundle for) that I am dying to bloom!!!!! Whistling

Bill, I grew up outside New Brunswick and went to Rutgers (Douglass C). My partner is from Westfield.

Wow, do I feel like a wimp - it's in the 20s here. But my dog opened the kitchen door yesterday while we were out and I'm hoping that he didn't kill my new orchids.... grrr....

Wish i could grow Cymbidiums like that! I keep my chinese cool but I didn't try them outdoors in the summer...maybe I am growing them too warm. I have a hybrid cym that i kept outside and it blooms regularly. I'll have to put my chinese outside I guess!

My only gripe with Cymbidiums is their size....even many of the minis still have large foliage. But gee, they make for a dramatic display!

At some point, Todd, I realized they are my favorite orchid and started collecting madly (I have around 45). But I didn't get them to really bloom till I put them in full sun two summers ago. I only have a handful of "minis" (which as you say are refering only to the flower size) and the rest are Chinese and species cym hybrids. So most of mine are pretty small and have scent. I don't think I have a single full sized one.

I think I might be following in your footsteps.... or stepping into your shoes - the shopping ones. The Cyms are gorgeous.

Can anyone advise me as to any orchids that can stand a dry area? My home is running about 30% humidity, and when we fire up the wood burning stove (nightly) it can get even lower...

Should I ask this question on another thread? Sorry if I'm completely OT.

Beautiful, Todd! I especially like those Wilsonaras. Odonts seem to do well for me too, but I don't have a Wilsonara.
