Hm, don't know about crabgrass specifically, but some grasses are sensitive to salts in general. Here in FL it's accepted that you can't grow Bahia lawn near the seashore. So you can slow down if not outright kill Bahia grass by spraying with a salt solution (table salt). It does need repeating a few times to be effective long-term and like any herbicide, you gotta be careful what else you hit if you're spraying amongst flower beds for example.

I also use baking soda solution to prevent mildew and other fungal problems in my veggie garden. As far as the crabgrass goes, I'd say it can't hurt to try it! Use a mild solution - I use 1/2tsp. per quart of water in a spray bottle.

Elaine, the reading I did said it was studied in FL, specifically for St Augustine, so if you have SA grass and crabgrass, you should try it.

Hm, I don't have any St. Augustine - no lawn to speak of at all in fact. But I have plenty of crabgrass. Possibly St.A is more salt tolerant as I know it's widely used for lawns out on the islands. Maybe the baking soda study was to get rid of crabgrass that is IN St.A lawns?

I'll give it a shot out in the veggie bed and see how the crabgrass reacts. We have dry weather for a few days in the forecast.

That's exactly it - it's great for SA due to the higher salt tolerance.

Official instructions are to make sure the crabgrass is wet, then DUST (as in, lightly dust, not big ole clumps of powder) the weeds. Others are saying it can be sprayed, etc. I have 2 kinds of crabgrass in my yard, at least. Don't care about the CG in the lawn - green grass isn't a status symbol for me. But when I can't see the woodchips for the crabgrass, I get grumpy. So one of these mornings when it's not 40-soemthing degrees out, I'm heading out when it's still dewy and testing it on one of my beds..
