Love the eyezone on Smooth Talker. I wish it was as blue ad Nicole's photo. Rio Fiesta is very colorful with that gorgeous edge. I dont remember Sugar Glider, but it is such a nice, soft pink. Thanks for posting.

I love the eye and size of Sugar Glider. Ordered it one year, and Trimmer
was sold out at that time. Ordered some other pinks instead. One or two
by Nicole Harry DeVito, and some other Trimmer ones.

Todays topic is "Beauty and the Beast". I woke up this morning to the most awesome flower ever on Port Orange FFO for the year. There is a story behind this flower. I got it from Dan Trimmer it's year of introduction. I loved it but the winter that year was 12" of snow, the most ever since I have been here and a very wet winter. I lost the plant along with a few others, I think this was 2010. The next year Dan replaced it along with a couple of others, that was last year. He sent me 2 large plants so I then it had 3 fans on each and this spring I sent Ann 3 really nice fans. Then I saw the beginning of leaf scorch or whatever it's called. One fan on Port Orange turned really yellow, so I trimmed it back and hoped for the best. This morning when taking a picture, I looked closer and OMG, the fan was rotted. I was very upset, the greatest flower ever was sick. So I got a knife and cut the rot off the crown of the bad fan and scraped it good, the remaining two fans will hopefully be ok. I put Sulfur dust on the exposed edge and will only water the other side of the plant and hope it dries up. If anyone knows what else I might do with something that would be easily available, please let me know. If I have to get this plant AGAIN, I will be very upset. Here is beauty and the beast (ROT).

Dot

Here is the beauty part, Port Orange, an absolutely gorgeous flower at least 6"

the beast part, treated and with fingers crossed.

I think that is the best flower I have ever seen on Port Orange. It has more ruffles. Dot, you won't have to replace the plant. Assuming what you sent me lives, I can send it back to you. I had one of my two fans of Lambertson's Vision's Voice do the same thing. I wonder what is causing the rot. Mine did not have a bad smell like some people report with rot.

Picotee Prism is looking good. You have so many pretty eyed daylilies. No daylilies blooming here.

Dot, April Ware? (troublex2) on DG did some experimenting using liquid bandage and another product, maybe nail polish, to seal the portion that had been cut, I think she first soaked it in a bleach solution, let it dry really well then sealed with the liquid bandage and again let it dry well. I did the liquid bandage on one of mine a couple of years ago and it worked, I still have the plant. but I have yet to see it bloom! Glare

Dot, here is what I have done in the past, sometimes they have worked and other times none of it has worked......
If you do not want to dig the plant up try pouring full strength bleach on the infected crown and you could pour some on the surrounding soil. I have done this with some success. Or if your not sure about full strength bleach, dilute it down. I pour it on every 2-3 days for a week or so just to make sure it's gotten all the rot. I have saved some this way.

Another thing is if I have a few fans together I will remove the rotted one. A lot of times it's already naturally seperated from the others and I just remove it from the soil and then disinfect the area around the rest with bleach or what I use now is Banrot.

I have head April talk about the liquid bandage, worth a try.

I also spray the soil and crown with an insecticide because some pests love to munch rotting stuff and I have noticed things crawling around and in the rotted crown and that may aggravate the damage. Another reason I do this is because some think that the bulb mite is one culprit to crown rot or at least they damage the crown so the fungus/bacteria that's naturally in the soil can get in.

Margaret,
Thank you so much for responding so quickly. I did my post in a hurry and was getting ready to go to the store. Since you responded so fast, I checked the post before leaving the house, so when I went to the store, I got some liquid bandage. Plus I also got some bleach, which I knew I was out of, and I also got some Comet. I had read on a previous post about putting Comet on cut crowns. I have this stuff now and will keep a close eye on it, if it dries up from the sulfur dust, all is well, if it still doesn't look good, I will pour bleach water on it, let it dry and use the liquid bandage. I was able to remove pretty much all of the rotted fan. I'm thinking like Michele suggested, about pouring some bleach water around the root area.

Michele, thanks so much for your information, I will try it all lol. Friends on here are the best.

Ann, I know you will send me back some, it's just that, I would hate to ask you to send some back when it is getting used to your yard. The fans that are left are huge, and I prefer to save them, partly because I want to set pods on it and partly because if I get another new plant, I will have the extra year to get it settled in AGAIN! I think twice should be enough to try a cultivar, the third time, something is wrong.

I have learned a lseeon here, NEXT time a fan yellows this bad, it will be dug out and disposed of immediately, before the fan has a chance to completely rot, and affect the whole plant.

Dot, aren't your plants in pots? If so, did you happen to use a moisture additive soil? The only plant that I ever lost to rot was Mort Morss(paid more for this plant than any I ever bought) and I had planted it in MG moisture control soil. I've used some this year but I've added loads of pine mulch in with it, so I hope it doesn't cause a problem. I got it in with a pallet of broken bags that I bought for really really cheap at Home Depot. So, I sure hope it doesn't cause a problem with all the pine mulch added in. This is Just an idea. I sure hope your efforts work.

It's just plum heartbreaking to lose a plant. Especially one that's as pretty as that one.

No Mona, just half potting soil and fine pines. I put some liquid bandage on it this morning, it looks ok, got my fingers crossed.

Baja California is blooming two giant flowers this morning. I am somewhat disappointed in it, it is more of a rose color than I expected.

Blaze On was my extra plant from Nicole, I am liking it more everytime it blooms. It is very short, but it is a new plant. My extra plant from Dan Trimmer was nice too. He sent me Pirate Moon as extra. Hurray!

I think Baja looks amazing. Every bloom is getting better and better. I agree that Blaze On is also very pretty. Thanks for sending me a fan of it in our swap this spring. Can't wait to see both of these bloom in my garden.
