It's a robber fly.

Here's my pics of one a few years ago I took that I posted at DG. My username there is Marilynbeth.

Sorry I didn't look and find the original pics in our home files.

Those bugs are scary looking and it looked liked it had captured a BF or a moth. Thanks goodness I have only seen it that one day and not since.

Here those things are hanging around fairly often. I usually try to avoid them, because one of them attacked me once...at least, I think it was one of those!.

Blinking

I didn't get too close to it when I took the pics. Those pics were cropped/zoomed in when I posted them.

Scary looking and scary for what it captures. Crying Blinking

I tip my hat to you. Margaret! I was being cautious since I have been finding mantids and other insects hiding under..must be hiding from the heat or stalking the other insects Smiling

The mantids are probably stalking, I'm not sure I like them anymore since I found out they kill hummingbirds. Angry

This insect dropped on our paver this morning..got the ID from Janet and it is called Eucalyptus borer..we certainly do not have Eucalyptus around here..maybe got blown by the wind....though it looks interesting..it is considered a pest for Eucalyptus trees..too bad it flew away already.I would have crushed it...at first glance it looked like a grilled corn on the cob with wings and legs..eek!
