I found an Iris blooming in my garden yesterday that I've never seen bloom before. It's growing in a clump of the tall Bearded Iris Hot Spiced Wine and has some things about it that remind me of HSW.. Is it possible that it's a self sown seedling or a mutation of HSW? Here is a photo of the Iris. I rather like it.

Here's a photo of Hot Spiced Wine next to it. They have the same color beard and the veining around the beard are somewhat alike. Any ideas of where it came from?

I have a few aberrations like that in my Iris beds this year Susan. I wondered if it had something to do with the very early very warm weather which made the Irises almost bolt!!

I'm also puzzled. An iris I thought was Terre de Feu came up looking like this.

What a beauty! I'd keep it and forget about Terre de Feu.

stilldew and muddyflats, it could be a number of things, first a seedling that either a bird dropped or a pod delivered and not noticed. Weather sometimes can do this

Another thing that can happen is drift from Roundup even a neighbors.

Zuzu what ever your TDF is, it is gorgeous and with Polly keep it.

I did spray some Round Up near the iris so maybe that explains it. Thanks for the help.

Dee's right. That's exactly what Roundup drift does. Sometimes I actually prefer the Roundup mutation to the original bloom.

I think my mystery has been cleared up. I got the iris from Neil Thurston, so I sent him a photo and he said it must be 'Rose Teall,' which was once growing right next to 'Terre de Feu' in his garden. As it happens, I also have 'Rose Teall' growing in another part of my garden and it's ready to bloom, so I'll see whether they're identical.

It looks like a good sniffer?

You were right, Polly. It's a great sniffer. To my nose, it smells like a blend of vanilla and strawberries.
