I've never tried pie tins but I have tried used and broken, shiny CDs.
My peach tree was bearing fruit beginning to ripen. When I saw that the birds were beginning to notice I hung the CDs from the small tree. About 10 CDs for a tree about 6ft tall. In three days exactly the birds decided the threat was benign. I then covered the tree entirely, even to the base, with netting. The birds were unable to reach the ripening fruit and so was I! I then cut several slits in the netting so I could reach in and harvest my peaches. Soon the birds saw the slits, used them as swing doors, in and out, and my fruit was destroyed in a day.
My tomatoes are soon to turn red and I'm going to net those plants ... with no slits
