Maridell, Hurray! You sure have something! I have never had good luck with the seeds. Were these actual portulaca or purslane?

They kind of look like purslane to me!

Hi Ladies, well I planted moss roses last year...that's portulaca, right? Or do I have my words mixed up. Any hoo I guess time will tell if I have flowers or if I'm watching weeds grow Whistling

It could be. My moss rose (portulaca) used to reseed like that in Michigan and they looked like that.

It's one of those mysteries! Sometimes Portulaca is called Moss Rose but so is Purslane. The names intertwine depending on the area you live in. Do you have a photo of last years, Maridell?

I don't think they are weeds. My guess it's going to be a beautiful Moss Rose.

Yep, you have Portulaca!

Purslane has fat, oval leaves and single blooms (usually).

Are the newbies coming up in the same place?

Yes, the newbies are in the same spot. I had wood chips in there last year but I cleared them out this Spring because the wind keep throwing them around the yard. And, the little sprouts are what I found underneath. I'll take another photo if they get larger and I can confirm they are portulaca.

They are portulaca if they are in the same spot! How fun! Looking forward to seeing your "babies" grow up.

I'm pretty sure they are one of the two. I grew a bunch out from seed this year (labeled Portulacas from Swallowtail) http://www.swallowtailgardense...

Mine have been much slower than I'd like! I started them in Jan, and they are still tiny, but granted that they were quite neglected there for awhile. We get seedlings all of the time around the landscaping from containers, and they can grow really fast from seedling to bloom!

I planted portulaca in pots and direct sowed into the ground.

The ones in the pots, I got only one plant. The ones in the ground - dozens coming up.

The purslane I planted into pots never germinated. I'm not surprised but I am disappointed. Sad

I really enjoy both. They are such happy and color plants Green Grin! Thumbs up

Purslane seeds do better in pots for me. Maybe because there's more things attacking the seedlings in the ground.

Mine are definitely going to have to be thinned. Guess I can move some to pots.

Maridell

I wintersowed both Purslane and Portulaca this past February. I know I have sprouts and one pot is coming faster than the other. I will take pictures of both and let you know what I have... I know one pot is doing better with the sprouts than the other, but at this point I am not sure which is which without looking outside.
