One of my first orchids was Z. blue bird. I've had it a little over 2 years. It just sat, no change in it what so ever. Now, finally it has 2 new shoots. I read that they bloom on new growth in early fall, Does that mean I"ll have to wait till next fall for a bloom (hopefully)? Or could it bloom in early winter?

Julie,
your plant might be the hybrid Zygopabstia Blue Bird?
http://apps.rhs.org.uk/horticu...

I am guessing - it may bloom at a different time than the species Zygopetalum, perhaps a lot earlier than the next Fall. Keeping my fingers crossed for a late Winter/ Spring flowering for you. Image-googling shows some Feb. and March dates.

Thanks Ursula, it seems your right...my plant is mislabeled. Glad I asked about it. I'll relabel it correctly, and keep my fingers crossed for spring blooms Big Grin

There is a Zygopetalum blue bird also. My Zygos bloom on fairly new growths, my fingers are also crossed, can't wait to see.

I looked up Zygopetalum Blue Bird in my OrchidWiz and there is only Zygopabstia which looks just like a Zygo. I believe they are one and the same and the Zygopabstia is now the name.

I thought the same.
There is also the Zygonisia Cynosure with the clonal name of 'Blue Bird' ( or Blue Birds)

Picked up a Zygopetalum from the local orchid nursery just before Christmas. Mine has a wonderful fragrance reminiscent of lilacs. When I sit in our media room it is sitting close by and rewards me with its wonderful fragrance. The first spike has now finished blooming and I have two more on the way.Thumb of 2011-01-31/rocklady/8372df

My phaiocalanthe Kryptonite "Chariot of Fire" is just glorious. Almost all of the blooms have opened.

I love the Phaiocalanthe Kryptonite. Your 'Chariot of Fire' is a beauty, and the spikes have a very nice bloom count.

Ursula, may I ask what your 'Ursula' is potted in? Mine only has one 8" spike at this point. It is on the porch where temps range from 33 to 53 at night. If we get a rain storm, I'll bring it in, as it gets borytis when it gets wet.

Carol, mine is right now in small bark. I am not sure if that is the best medium for it though.

Thank you. I was really hoping for better performance this year. Guess I'm going to have to practice with the terrestials .

The first one reminds me of my Zygoneria King's Park which hasn't bloomed in a very long time.
