Here is a place to let go/say goodbye to orchids that didn't make it!

Love this interesting, novel thread. Kathy, could you share, for educational purposes, what caused the demise of your deceased beloved listed here? Thanks!

I had a plague of rot after a very rainy summer that I'm still fighting. I used physan (cleans greenhouse algae) directly sprayed on plants (I mix physan and fertilizer together when I water heavy every other week) and some peroxide root soaks before repotting which has helped keep the rot at bay.

I started this on DG when I realized that orchids will come and go and got past blaming myself for deaths(or feeling too cocky about my successes!). I have lots of pics of orchids no longer with me. It's nice to remember that they were once alive and happy here. And maybe I'll try another time with them. After all I understand them a bit more every year.

Thanks!
I have not grown orchids long enough to contribute here, but I am working on it! LOL.
I know I could fill a large volume with all my dearly departed perennials, roses, clematis, Iris, etc. ;-)

Ha about working on it! It's sorta like a life celebration vs. funeral thing!

When I first grew orchids I thought that they didn't die so I took it personally if they did. That's another reason I made the thread. Now that some folks have decided I'm an expert (ha ha) and should listen to me (bigger ha), I thought they'd avoid feeling like failures if they saw this thread.

Laelias are gone. It's official that I've lost L.cinnabarina, fournieri, and sanguiloba. Sigh. Overwatering, I think.

I hear you, that is a big sigh.
My recommendation would be to try again with additional grow light bulbs right above them ( without burning of course). I would bet you watered them just fine.

I'm thinking the combo of a fan on them, too wet, and cool temps (50-55F). They are in full north light in winter with snow glare. It is medium light except on very dreary days.

I am so reluctant to start posting here out of fear I would swamp the thread. But there is one I still cry about:
My Slc Matthew's Gem 'Akane' which I got from Hoosier Orchids ( out of business, sigh) and lost last Summer due to exceptional wet weather. I noticed the soft pbulbs too late. I could just kick myself.

Thanks Ursula, for the enlightenment on the cause of death of your lovely SLC. So helpful to hear of these things.

Dendrobium aberrans past away yesterday. Despite heavy waterings it just dried up and died. Rest in peace beauty!
