How cool Sandi. Your neighbor's Dad and his family probably did more food plant growing due to the economy/mind set when he was growing up.
A friend whose husband came here from China as a child said his parents had a really hard time understanding that the vegetables would be available in the grocery and that they did not have to buy as much as they could afford in one visit.
