For my seed starting this year, I have been using Miracle Gro potting soil (not seed starting mix), and I tried something that someone here on ATP suggested, which was to pour boiling water over the mix before planting.

The boiling water moistened the mix very nicely (which cooled down quickly for planting), and thus far (it's been over 3 weeks now) we've had only one or two gnats, which I am convinced came in from outside. (There are a LOT of gnats out there.) The ones that came inside were trapped on a sticky yellow trap I put up next to the pots. Thumbs up

So far, so good; it looks like this year, I won't have to listen to months of complaints from DH, in the form of one pun or another on "gnat". Hilarious!
Evaluating an iris seedling, hopefully for rebloom
