I know that a very young tree will catch up with a 3" BB caliper tree of the same species after a few years, but have been unable to find expert documentation to support this observation which is both personal and one I have heard for years in classes at Botanic Gardens and from private growers. Can you please recommend a professional source for this information as I have difficulty convincing friends that they are wiser to plant a young tree with minimized root disturbance than to spend hundreds of dollars for a large tree, and more for professional labor to move and plant it.
