Yeah, I was thinking Armyworm or something else not so pleasant. I mean, everything has its place in the circle of life. If he was wandering that far away from anything looking like food, it might be that it's ready to pupate, in which case it won't be eating anymore. Doesn't look like any butterfly, though, if that makes you feel better.
