I have no idea what I planted previously. No bunching onions, but I do have chives at the other end of the garden. I don't think it is them, I don't get much reseeding from chives. I'll separate the garlic seedlings out a bit and see what happens. They are in my herb garden 'magical' section and are simply there to repel vampires, so all is good.
