Just wanted to add that--putting extra soil on top of a potted plant is a slow death sentence.
If you are re-potting a plant--put the extra soil on the bottom to compensate fot a deeper pot.
The top level as it was has to stay that way. A slight top-dressing of maybe 1/2" is OK.
