No, it's the real deal. They are red roses that take up minerals from the Euphrates, very similar to how the "blue" orchids take up dye. The soil and water in that specific area is the key to the color. I suspect any dark colored rose planted in that area would end up with black blossoms. It sounds as if the ph and minerals affect the roses the most as summer wears on.
Remember that children, marriages, and flower gardens reflect the kind of care they get.
