Now you used Orchids as an example, in this case especially, the answer is simply not that straight forwards. You can grow that same Orchid in bark, in Sphagnum, pebbles, Coconut fiber, mounted on wood, tied to a seashell and all are correct depending on where you live and what your growing conditions are.
