I can't tell you what it is, just what it looks like: a different type of leaf that is small and fat. Its not a seed capsule as it never breaks open, just sprouts new plants. Maybe I am not looking close enough and they really are seed pods.
Next time I find one, I will take a photo and examine closely. There aren't any in Reno so it will have to be a California trip.
Sorry I have, once again, said something that causes you issues. I will change my previous post to not include leaves.
