Grape vine spreads either by birds dropping the seeds after eating the grapes, or by runners underground from the main trunk. When you do get to the point where it's safe to work on the base of the vine, I would take a hand saw and a shovel because it's probably more involved than you think, and you may decide to remove it entirely. It's very rewarding when it's done because you've saved at least one tree, if not more
