Its what we plant here in the desert. They don't take much water and they are pretty. I have never seen one reseed. Some have been classified as invasive and noxious, but as there are about 2 dozen species, I suspect some are tamer than others. I'm not sure which one grows here (it has a very weird musky smell - if you are within 50 feet of one, you know it) but it comes in bright yellow, pink and almost white.
