I helped beta test the first seed swap Winter Sowing Plant and/or Seed Trader Seed Starter Salvias Hummingbirder
Hostas Cottage Gardener Annuals Echinacea Container Gardener Dahlias
I've always started them by the winter sowing method. I don't have any experience directly into the ground. I do know they need good summer heat to get them going. With the winter sowing method, they stay pretty warm and are protected when they are young. I transplant them to pots when they get their 2nd or 3rd leaf.
