I hope you are talking about scientific names because common name are often silly and always misleading.

Scientific names: plant characteristics point to a particular family and genus (DNA testing has re-arranged a lot of that though). Species is often named after a person who contributed a lot to that naming/discovery (including his/her name). Then there are varieties....
