I live on a Christmas Tree Farm and we have very little formal gardening area. I have tropicals that I cherish and keep in the greenhouse and in my house in the winter, but in the summer there is really no place but the decks (2) to put them. This year I got a brain storm to put them in matching pots in the dog's fenced in yard so they could climb on the dog run fence and the wire around the deck. I was not sure it would work when we mowed the grass, so I had my SIL put greystone 12 x 12 slabs around the front of the deck and at spots around the run to put the pots on. This makes mowing and trimming easier without harming the pots.
I have bougainvillea, mandevilla, jasmine all climbing and hibiscus on the deck with a few other star (royal) jasmine that do not climb as much as the Maid of Orleans and Angulare.
I have chosen colors over the years to attract hummingbirds. Red, Orange, etc. I do have white with the jasmine of course.
The red mandevilla is coming along very well since all of these plants were cut back after they bloomed last fall.
This jasmine is a younger plant this year and is doing very well climbing on the deck. Maid of Orleans is only beginning to come back and have buds. It was cut back and almost died over the winter.
Maid of Orleans 5 year old plant
The burgundy bougainvillea is just starting to flower.
Hibiscus is a double orange on the deck.
The orange and pink bougainvillea are only beginning. This is what they looked like last year.
The house is cream color with grey shutters and this is a picture of the deck (the orange color must be the awning shadow, but it gives you an idea how it looks now. Also a shot with the little man who enjoys this pen.
I hope you enjoyed seeing my tropicals as much as I enjoy growing them. Have a wonderful day.
