Where this species is native, the average annual humidity is well under 10%. The winter rainfall can be as low as 5 inches. The soils are rocky and VERY well draining. These do not tolerate wet winters at all, and generally don't like humid summers either. In Colorado or Utah or Idaho or western Washington or Arizona (etc) no problem. Elseware they are at least challenging.
