Thanks, Mpsteve. That clarifies a lot.

I had not zoomed in to realize that the red was a mass of spring flowers, not fall foliage as it appeared.

That is very likely a named red-flowered clone of Cornus florida - maybe one like 'Cherokee Chief'.
